Bespoke Panelled Pantry

WINCHESTER

This magnificent Georgian town house is located in the heart of historic Winchester. The house had been restored by its previous owners, but the new owners felt it lacked the unique character suitable for a traditional home of this period. Commissioning the antique dealer, furniture designer and decorator Max Rollitt, the rooms have been re-imagined, including the kitchen and pantry which were designed by Max Rollitt and made by us.

Panelled Pantry

The purpose of panelling is not just decorative. It was quite typical in back of house spaces of Georgian and Victorian origin, and its principle purpose was to make rooms in stone buildings more comfortable by insulating them from the colder brickwork or stone behind.

There are several ways to panel a room, with grander front of house spaces often benefitting from larger panel and frame construction, while back of house spaces such as this usually being panelled in straight boards, often with a cock-bead detail at the join to minimise the visual affect of any timber movement as the wood expands and contracts.

The designer of this space, Max Rollitt, and Guild Anderson share similar values; our approach to design and execution of any project centres on the belief that in every home we work on, there is a story waiting to be honoured.

"Panelling a pantry has the benefit of making a space feel cosier. It also provides us with a perfectly level and true susbtrate on which to design shelving and cabinetry. In old houses in particular, where walls are often made of fragile materials, panelling provides a solid structure on which to build furniture".

FEATURES

Small Space. Big Impact.

The panelled pantry has been sensitively designed to take advantage of the small footprint.  The cabinets have been hand painted in Farrow & Ball’s Farrows White, with pops of colour injected throughout using Farrow & Ball’s Incarnadine.

A combination of work surfaces include clear oiled Iroko alongside Bianco Eclipse Quartz, which is a natural stone more robust than marble.

Lost wax cast brass handles from Optimum Brasses complete the cabinetry, while modern conveniences include taps from Barber Wilsons & Co and integrated Miele appliances.
