Guild Anderson's workshop clamps B&W

Stephen Joyce - Workshop Manager

Behind the Design

August. 2022
Our valued team of designers and makers here at Guild Anderson all have a story to tell.  Some have trained for years to gain the experience needed to join our team.  Others have worked as apprentices, honing their skills through years of hard graft.  Others have come to design by chance and have developed their incredible raw talent right here in our studio.  Whichever path they have taken we feel it is fitting to celebrate them.

We love shining a light on the talented people that make up our team.  From their initial desire to follow their chosen career path, to the final pieces they craft, our dedicated designers talk us through how they contribute to the team that create our beautiful bespoke cabinetry.

Steve studied for an NVQ in carpentry and joinery before joining our workshop as an apprentice in 2008.  Guild Anderson was also in the initial phase of developing the business, and he joined at the perfect time to grow alongside us.

As one of our first apprentices he went on to gain his level 3 NVQ in Furniture Making, making him fully qualified and a key member of our expanding company.

Guild Anderson workshop hinge details B&W

From the moment he joined he showed a keen interest in learning new skills and adapting to the changes of a growing business.  He has developed a comprehensive understanding of the design and make process, creating furniture of the highest quality.  He has learnt the intricacies of furniture made by hand, working with the raw timber to the finished piece.  Continuing to show great skill he then headed up our CNC (Computer numerical control) machinery, and was a key player in leading us through a tricky few years of recession.

His love of cabinet making and attention to detail is still a huge part of what drives him.  However his biggest challenge to date has been to step away from being so hands-on on the workshop floor, to the more senior role of Workshop Manager.  This acknowledgment for his commitment and hard work is well-justified.  He is a critical member of both our workshop and management teams.

His managerial role has allowed him to build a workshop crew that are not only highly skilled, but multi-skilled.  He now ensures that all areas of our workshop run smoothly, efficiently and that all production is on schedule.  Quite a responsibility, as our clients will agree.

This year Steve joined our Operations Board as part of a group of four that oversee the day-to-day running of the four key areas of our business.  As a group they support each other and continue to learn as individuals.

We have a wonderful team of dedicated, hardworking craftsmen and we look to invest in them through the training and support that we can offer.  We are always on the look out for new apprentices and employees.  The Guild Anderson business success is built on the skill, experience and dedication of individual members.  Right from design concept, through production management, to the fine craft elements of cabinet-making and joinery; it is our culture to strive for excellence in all these fields.

Steve’s  training as an apprentice and the dedication he has shown through his commitment to working his way up the ladder, has been rewarded in his role as a successful manager within our company.
