Kate studied Interior Design at college; one of the modules included kitchen design; hand drawing floorpans and scaled elevations on tracing paper with ink! Kate says this method of designing appealed to her technical brain; she loves problem solving and spatial planning as well as the creative side, so she felt this was the area of the course that she most wanted to pursue.
Starting her design career almost by chance; she noticed an advert in the window of a bespoke kitchen design company in Winchester; they were looking for a kitchen designer. Fresh from her course she applied for the role taking only her college design work with her to the interview. They were so impressed with what they saw that they offered her the role!
Kate has worked for both small independent kitchen designers as well as much larger companies. She has learned the intricacies of both ways of working. One of her recent roles saw her teaching kitchen design to new designers, travelling to each showroom to help develop the skills of her team, but her real passion is to design herself.
For the majority of her career she has been based in a showroom, client facing; a position she loves. She says that “every client is different and designing each kitchen is a very personal process”. She is passionate about bespoke design; “so many other brands use mass produced carcasses and drawers; what appealed to me about Guild Anderson is that every single piece of furniture that they produce is 100% bespoke, they do not cut corners, they use real wood, not MDF, they design with such attention to detail. Simply put; they create such a unique hand made product for every single client”.
