Guild Anderson’s bespoke kitchen design commissions take us throughout Somerset and across the South West of England.  All our kitchen designs are varied and unique from kitchens, laundries, boot-rooms, dressing rooms, to studies and home cinemas; our commissions encompass stand-alone projects to substantial house renovations.

Somerset’s county town is Taunton. The county is affectionally known as the Land of the Summer People, a monicker which reflects the nomadic seasonal habbits of the counties ancient inhabitants.   The county boasts a landscape rich in ancient and cultural history, industrial achievements and mystical tales.  Its coastline faces the Bristol Channel and Wales.  The extensive limestone caves of the Mendip Hills were settled during the Palaeolithic period, where examples of cave art have been found. The Somerset Levels also have a long history of settlement, and are known to have been settled by Mesolithic hunters.

Somerset is a county that is home to many traditional rural crafts. Willow growing and weaving is not as extensive as it used to be, but is still carried out on the Somerset Levels.  Woven baskets from Somerset are used in Guild Anderson’s bespoke kitchen, pantry and larder cabinet designs.

Towns such as Castle Cary, Bruton and Frome grew around the medieval weaving industry, and the town of Street developed as a centre for the production of woollen slippers, boots and shoes.  Known for its apple orchards Somerset still produces fruit juices and cider.

Quarries at Doulting supplied freestone used in the construction of Wells Cathedral. Bath stone is also widely used, with Bath Granite & Marble being one of Guild Anderson’s preferred suppliers.

Hamstone is the colloquial name given to stone from Ham Hill, which is also widely used in the construction industry.  Blue Lias has been used locally as a building stone and as a raw material for lime mortar and Portland cement.

Somerset is a county rich in medieval ecclesiastical architecture as well as Georgian buildings. Bath, a city built almost entirely from Georgian architecture, has influenced building throughout the county.  Bristol, a trading port, also boasts many Georgian houses which were built from the fortunes of successful traders of the counties crafts.  Tintinhull, Montacute, Clevedon Court, and Hadspen House are all fine examples of listed buildings within the county.  

More recently Somerset has seen people relocate from London with developments of international art galleries, world renowned garden design, excavations of Roman ruins.  It is a home to music festivals, fashion designers, luxury hotels, artisan markets and an impressive array of quality food producers.

Guild Anderson have been commissioned by clients relocating or redesigning homes within Somerset.  One recent project has seen the extensive renovation and extension of a Grade II Manor House where we designed a stunning contemporary kitchen with a more industrial aesthetic, as well as a large laundry room complete with Podab drying cabinet.
