A light filled contemporary London kitchen extension

London Kitchen Extension

WIMBLEDON

In the leafy suburb of Wimbledon our clients home feels more like a country residence than one located a mere 7 miles from London’s city centre.

London houses are a diverse mix of traditional, contemporary and modern design and while we are often charged to design kitchens for period country houses, when commissioned with a project in a more urban environment, that marries traditional craftsmanship with a contemporary setting, we could not be more excited.

Our clients bought their home in 2021, taking on a renovation project that far exceeded their expectations.  3 years later, having instructed the help of old friends Mary and Nicole from Salvesen Graham; a great architect from the team at Flower Michelin; and kitchen design from us at Guild Anderson, they have taken a tired house and created a magnificent family home.

Perfect Symmetry

What strikes you when you enter this room are the number of windows.  They flood it with natural light from all sides including the cleverly positioned roof lights sitting above the sink and preparation zones.

The building is surrounded by a generous well-stocked garden as a result the room feels incredibly calm.  It’s a big space with high ceilings and Nick and the design team have configured it perfectly to make full use of the generous footprint.

There are two eating areas – one is more child friendly and a great homework spot, while the other is a large dining table perfect for entertaining and larger family meals.

Neutral tones from floor to ceiling give a very calming aesthetic to this large room.  The painted exposed roof trusses create a strong architectural presence and contrast perfectly with the pale hand painted kitchen in Paint & Paper Library Sand III, with long Penrose cabinet handles by Joseph Giles.

We took time getting to know our clients by visiting their home, allowing us to understand who they are, and how they live.

Involving Nick Anderson early in the project’s development meant the layout for the proposed kitchen extension was adjusted.  His advice alone, has according to the owner; “unlocked the layout by simply moving one single door.  He suggested relocating the boot room door from its intended place next to the pantry, and placing it on the other side of what Nick proposed to be the cooking zone. As a result the boot room is much more functional and the Wolf range cooker now sits central to the kitchen wall”.  She goes on to say that “Nick was amazing, he focused on creating a functional space and has created not only a fabulous kitchen but a wonderful entertainment room”.

This kitchen clearly displays how bespoke design can elevate a contemporary space. The juxtaposition of Guild Anderson’s traditional cabinetry with contemporary architectural features creates a calm, understated room that enhances the home overall; culminating in a superb family kitchen; walk-in pantry; plus ample space to dine and to entertain.
