CALNE

We have enjoyed many of the projects we have worked on especially bespoke kitchen design commissions near Calne where we have worked several times in recent years.

Calne is located in Wiltshire’s designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in the North Wessex Downs; it is no surprise that there is a strong allure to the beautiful historic market town.  Just 17 miles north east of Pewsey, and 13 miles east of Marlborough, it is the only town to sit by the river Marden.

20 original cloth mills dot the Marden river, as Calne was once home to a significant woollen broadcloth industry in the 18th century.  The wool industry brought with it money and evidence of this is seen by the parish church where 24 listed buildings remain.

Another fine example of local period architecture near Calne is Bowood House, a Grade I listed Georgian country house in Wiltshire, halfway between Calne and Chippenham. It is home to the Marquess of Lansdowne, whose family have lived there since 1754.  With interiors by Robert Adam, it stands in extensive grounds which include a garden designed by Lancelot “Capability” Brown.

Calne’s other main industry was the Harris pork processing factory until its closure in 1983; renowned for its traditional ham and bacon curing, known as the Wiltshire cure.

The pork-curing industry developed because pigs reared in Ireland were landed at Bristol and then herded across England on drovers’ roads to Smithfield Market, London, passing through Calne.

There are excellent rail and road connections from the nearby M4 through to London or Bristol.  With two secondary schools and multiple primary schools, paired with a good range of pubs and restaurants in the town centre and surrounding villages, it has a lot offer those relocating from London.  Just 8 miles to the south, on the outskirts of Devizes, sits the impressive architectural marvel that is Caen Hill Locks.

Guild Anderson’s kitchen design commissions in and around Calne have varied from listed buildings to more modest country homes.  Projects have included kitchens as well as boot rooms, walk-in larders and dressing rooms.
