Edwardian Country House Kitchen

HAMPSHIRE

Before purchasing their home our client had already known the house for a long time, as it originally belonged to her friend’s parents.  In need of some renovation and with the help of Adam Architecture, they created a captivating vision for the future of this classic Grade II listed English country home.

Set within glorious grounds and dating back to the late 17th century, the majority of the elegant and well-proportioned rooms face south overlooking the mature gardens, something our clients wanted to enhance further when renovating and remodelling this house.

Relocating The Kitchen To A Larger Room

As with any house of this size a large family kitchen forms a focal point in the home. However, the original kitchen was one of the smallest rooms on the ground floor, hidden in a corner of the property with multiple ancillary rooms leading from it.  They were functional spaces but lacked focus and cohesion.  We are often tasked with moving a kitchen to a larger room within a period property, and this was no exception.

The original drawing room featured an oak floor, with an enormous full height bay window that overlooked the mature garden.  This is grand room and it felt most appropriate to re-locate the kitchen in to this space to make full use of the large footprint, creating a central family space, perfect for entertaining.

The original kitchen was a tiny space, located in a corner of the house, and felt disproportionate for a home of this size.  It felt more appropriate to relocate it to what was the drawing room.  This created a large family kitchen, making full use of the floor to ceiling windows and the view to the garden.

The AGA is positioned in a redundant fireplace beneath a bespoke mantle piece that hides a Novy extractor.  Our clients intended to put in a large stone surround over the AGA but decided to go for the more refined and subtle over mantle inspired by the one they had seen in our design studio.

The fluted sink area features a Quooker tap and cooler cube, along with Barber Wilsons & Co. Regent 3 Hole mixer tap in polished brass living finish complete this area.

Optimum Brasses pulls, knobs, swan necks and bar handles in ‘Antique Brass’ finish are used throughout all the back of house rooms.
